california ranch

this is a favorite style for me to photograph:: a little golden sunshine, and california ranch…  and this is a favorite family to photograph.  ever since i met them a year ago when we photographed baby harper…  you instantly can’t help becoming their friends – their warmth and kindness is contagious.

a week…

it’s been a sweet week.

i have quietly cherished simple moments with my little ones.  and been over the moon seeing families i adore and get the honor to photograph…  being a working mom has its challenges, and big rewards too.  today a fellow working mom said it best, “when you have a productive day at work and your ‘work/life/mom’ balance is a success, you feel like you can conquer the world…  then a week later you’re sobbing asking how in the world will you be able to handle it all…”  we laughed at the truth of this.  when it works, and i get to do what i love AND be a mom — it doesn’t get much better.  (i’m leaving out that i called my friend emily sobbing for the silliest thing yesterday that was overwhelming me…)

but overall, i truly feel blessed to have the most kind, adorable, supportive, and might i add… beautiful clients ever!  thank you to all for letting me do what i do and love it so…

…and best of all — that i can be with my boys for the little moments of quiet in the day and the big moments of chaos & fun too.a few teasers from a couple shoots this week…

every family has a story, this one includes happiness

every one has a story in their life.  and every family together, has their story…  often private, sometimes known.

we know this sweet family in our personal life, and usually there is so much going on, i don’t sit and truly see their interactions between their family – with each other.  i walked away from taking their pictures so honored to see into their world a little better, and so very happy for the delight & joy for each other, that was so clear & evident.

i love listening to different songs as i edit — and sometimes one line of a song or the energy of the music just fits.  the band, “florence + the machine” was playing, and it was the song “dog days are over”.   it starts with two words…  ”happiness, happiness”  it has such an energy to it i smiled and decided to choose it for susie’s family’s pictures.  i see happiness for them now and pray happiness for them in days to come.

harris has brought so much happiness.  hudson exudes it in his jumps.  your family is precious, fun, & enchanting.  we treasure each of you.  xoxo, the bostroms

flashback

this picture was taken november 2009…  i can’t believe that was about three years ago.  he’ll always be this same sweet little boy to me.

watching kai grow by the day, connecting, smiling with his whole face – especially his eyes.

oh my, motherhood…  it just makes me melt.

the barbershop

i think it all started few weeks back, when gavin said he wanted his hair cut short…  really short…   like a “boy cut”  i assured him that girls can have short hair and boys can have long hair… it doesn’t matter…

then — thoren (cousin)…  with his short cute hair.

then everett (bestest buddy) sealed the deal with his new buzz cut…

so gavin was insisting on a short hair cut and my heart was sinking.  my little boy.  his trademark hair.  gone??  big sigh…. (and little tear)

so in memory of the longer look  – i took pictures before we took him to the barber.

a day reflecting on the type of mother i want to be: encouraging self expression, making personal decisions, & growing up…  being a mother that encourages who my son is and who he desires to be.

so off to the barber we went, but not until i took a few last pictures of my boy with his blonde locks.

here it is.  here HE is.  so very proud and so very pleased.

and i so wish his old style was back.

but he looks so handsome and grown up and proud, so for that i am also so proud of the big boy he is becoming.

the wedding weekend

such a bittersweet feeling sorting through the photographs of one of the most amazing, meaningful, beautiful, simple, intricate, creative, and inspiring wedding i have ever attended.  maybe because it was ingrid & matt–but it appeared so effortlessly beautiful and natural.   we love these two so very deeply and couldn’t be more at peace with their union.

as we drove into town after hours & hours in the car with a three and a half week old baby kai and our gavin to see cousins before all the festivities, this new little hit “ho hey” came on the radio.  we all sat quietly and listened to it.  the main chorus of belonging together is just too fitting.

on a side note::  it was completely unnecessary, but i held kai as he slept, the entire time putting these pictures together.  i just can’t help myself.

we will and do miss you deeply.  but are so beyond excited for the beginning of your married life together.

we can’t wait to watch how you take on the world and life.

how you inspire all of us to quietly & beautifully & adventurously live life.  you are an amazing pair.

we are lucky to call you family.

life

last night, heaven welcomed my grandpa. my mom’s “daddy”.

last night heaven sent a sweet baby too.  my sister’s lucia maikalani.

lucia meaning “light”  maikalani meaning “sent from heaven”.

a few days ago we celebrated the union of ingrid & matt, and then said good-bye as they packed their car for vermont.

life is full.

beautiful and sorrowful.

celebrating and grieving at the same time.

my heart is so happy and so sad.

thank you trey for sending the pictures — i love her already.  i can’t wait to meet her!
