the barbershop

i think it all started few weeks back, when gavin said he wanted his hair cut short…  really short…   like a “boy cut”  i assured him that girls can have short hair and boys can have long hair… it doesn’t matter…

then — thoren (cousin)…  with his short cute hair.

then everett (bestest buddy) sealed the deal with his new buzz cut…

so gavin was insisting on a short hair cut and my heart was sinking.  my little boy.  his trademark hair.  gone??  big sigh…. (and little tear)

so in memory of the longer look  – i took pictures before we took him to the barber.

a day reflecting on the type of mother i want to be: encouraging self expression, making personal decisions, & growing up…  being a mother that encourages who my son is and who he desires to be.

so off to the barber we went, but not until i took a few last pictures of my boy with his blonde locks.

here it is.  here HE is.  so very proud and so very pleased.

and i so wish his old style was back.

but he looks so handsome and grown up and proud, so for that i am also so proud of the big boy he is becoming.

Tears in my eyes….he is and will always be your freckled handsome little boy! This was one of my favorites in your blog. The words you share about what you want and he wants are so true and our journey as they get older. I honor your talents to document such a special day, you are a true artist.

oh stacy, I would have been in tears! oh bless him for making the decision for himself, of course he is delicious either way. they absolutely look so grown up with short hair. my eldest boy really needs a cut – so he can actually see where he’s going! – but he doesn’t want to.. and my youngest has just had his first snip to get rid of his mullet.. I am still sad about it! but of course, it will always grow back :) and as an aside – every time I visit, you take my breath away with your photos. my god, you are like nothing else stacy! these shots are just ridiculous. in THE BEST way. x

Oh Stacy, I feel ya! He’s so handsome (both boys are) and with you two as parents, he couldn’t have better guides in life. Thanks for reminding me what parenting is about and how I too want to be the best mom for each of my kids in their own unique ways but oh how challenging that can be personally. Thanks for sharing!

Oh Stacy – you have so beautifully chronicled the essence of this new season in your sweet son’s journey, and yours, as his thoughtful mother. Well done! And I love the song! Much love …

The good thing about hair is that it grows back :) Maybe one day he will choose to let his hair grow again. But, he look so grown up and handsome with his short hair.

Ok….So I’m crying too, because I know how hard that was for you…it means he’s growing up! Which is amazing, but feels a little like loss too. The good news…HE IS AMAZING in any hair and how great that he knew what he really wanted. What a grown up little man making these decisions. So proud of you friend! : ) Way to go Stacy!!!

First and foremost, C-U-T-E can’t be buzzed off with clippers. Secondly, you totally rock the Casbah. I applaud you for giving him the freedom to be who HE choses to be. Rock ON, sista. You rule. ALL. XO

I still have the gavin rocker picture you gave me on the fridge… the one where he is on that bridge… such an awesome photo of his hair going wild! I remember my haircuts were always one of my favorite things when i was a little guy… he’ll grow his hair out again and again! High fives to the both of you for making it a fun and memorable experience of growing up :) He looks more like a mini johan now. Much love!
