the cake

my dear friend got married this weekend, and we (meaning my mom and i) made the wedding cake.  deep breath, we did it.  it was a big team effort – with my mom and i, of course the little guy, my dad, and johan too.  thank you!! (oh – and gwen too, for her oven)

we made chocolate cake, (got tips on what to do here), and with a yummy cream cheese frosting.   it was just a small feat, a wedding of about 180+ people – in my TINY little kitchen.

my mom was incredible in the process.  since i was a bridesmaid – she actually did a lot of the hardest work.  there were lots of mis-haps a long the way.  and potential disasters too.  like when we had made all the cakes and were in the middle of frosting them, and were talking over what to do with the bottom layer of the main cake since it was uneven.  my dad, trying to help – came over and put a piece of cardboard on top of the large cake and proceeded to say ‘well maybe this could help’ – and started JAMMING down on the cake to smash(?) the uneven parts?  lets just say voices were raised a little in protection of the cake….

or maybe when they were on the way to the reception hall and the main large tiered cake fell over in the back of their suv when they were getting onto the freeway…  i think that happened twice maybe?  but luckily you couldn’t even tell at the wedding;)

but somehow – it ended up working out, tasting delicious, being fun (yes fun), and being special and memorable for us.  Sianne and David are so awesome – I think even if we delivered a gross, ugly cake – they still would have loved it.  that’s just who they are.  and we did our best to make it lovely, yummy, and special.  because they are MORE than worth it.  they are so special and lovely – that this was the ONE and only wedding cake we’ll ever make – right mom?!

i told my mom i wish i could promise her i’d never sign her up to do something like this again – but that’d be lying.  my dad piped in from the other room, “yeah…  it’ll just be something else.”   probably true – and there johan, and my parents will be helping me with some other crazy idea i come up with.

this wedding cake was made with so much love for two of the most lovely people we know.  i personally think it was a great experience and such a special way to show sianne and david we love them.  and we do love them – a lot!

Turns out the flowers the florist put on were the prettiest part, of course.

i love it! wish i could have seen your moms face as the cake topples over! you definitely got a story out of it. i’m sure everyone could taste, if not see the love put into it.
until the next adventure…. ;)
