I wrecked mine too. We were visiting my cousin and she suggested taking the kids for a swim in the pond by her house. I was watching four kids (2 of my own) so I stopped taking pictures but was standing in ankle deep water. In one second my niece and my daughter were underwater–just top of their hair was showing. I went to get them and went completely underwater and my 24-70 was in my hand (which I managed to keep above the water line). I had it in the air and I pushed the girls up one at a time giving them air with my other hand but I couldn’t breath so I had to put my camera and lens under so I could save everyone. My cousin later told me that the pond was actually a quarry so I could have lost them forever–it was over 40-80ft deep, thank God I put it under. I felt the same as you and the nature of its demise particularly put it in perspective but this was last year and I haven’t replaced it:( I miss it often.
